The meeting that Rina Arano arranged on Twitter ended in tragedy. On June 5, 2022, the 23-year-old woman left her home to meet with Hiroyuki Sanpei, a 33-year-old man she met online. Sanpei picked her up at Mito Station in Japan, and from that moment on, Rina’s trail was lost. After three days of silence, her family reported her missing.
The authorities tracked the GPS of Sanpei’s car and, after an intense search, found her body in a forest in Hitachiota. She was next to a tree, without clothes, and had been there for two weeks. Although the man said he left her at a store, her cell phone turned up at his house. For this crime, Sanpei was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2024.
